Guess who I saw on Tuesday at Fort Canning Park?
Post-show email conversation:
Me: Just got home from ting tings. I wish I was her.
Redacted: You wish you had an unfortunate dye job?
Me: Yes. And noticeable hair extensions.
Redacted: I think it could be within your reach if you dream and really want
those things.
Her name is Katie W…
done(Wiley opened. When this song is as big as Soulja Boy, remember: you heard it here first.)
Perth and I share the same summer anthem (just on a different timeframe), as I witnessed last weekend at the MGMT show.
Luke Steele opened. He played James Taylor, Carolina, in honor of MGMT. (Odd, I thought. Are they from NC?) Naturally, I was one out of 4,000 that knew the song – by heart. Good news? I got footage. Bad news? Battery died immediately following. Errr. Will post later.
Then, I ran into my hotel concierge. “Oh, hey.” Awkward.
The crowd wasn’t rowdy, but it was was full of drunken teenagers. And security wouldn’t allow MGMT to start until they were calm. It was unreal. Security was on stage pleading, “Take a step back. Come on guys, you’re doing really well.” A encouraging security force. After the occasional thrown beer and an F-off (from girls, mind you) the crowd “settled.” Security was then is handing out water to the crowd. Perth security: as nice as your mom.
The show starts. I have front row, thank goodness. The crowd, one more beach-y and Naomi Watts-esque than the next, sang along to each of the Brooklynites’ songs. Decked in the requisite hipster look: mop-head, skinny jeans, dirty Converse, white tee. Only thing missing was the PBR.
They play all of the hits. Time to Pretend, Weekend Wars and The Youth were my faves. They encored with Kids – and it was thrilling, I have to say.
The entire crowd was dancing – the best of the whole evening, hands down. To turn around and see a huge amphitheatre moving in tandem with the beat was astounding. Even MGMT was having a blast. It was now that, I felt, they showed their personalities. (They are the kids, my god.) They’re like Jonas brothers in Ray Bans. Andew VanWyngarden started goofing off. Grabbed a bra which had been tossed on stage and chucked it at the guitarist. Deep in his mind he must be thinking:
whatishappeningthisisfreakingawesome!!
It was their first time in Australia. Mine too.

Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark tour came to Singapore in October – I was lucky to catch the rescheduled show. He performed most of the hits from College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation and a handful from 808s & Heartbreak…including “Pinocchio Story,” which surprisingly made it on the album – live from Singapore. It was “Stonger,” “Homecoming,” “Through the Wire” and “American Boy” that really got us out of our seats though. Oh, and “Love Lockdown” is still stuck in my head.

Stronger This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.
The show was not nearly sold out. We could have easily had floor seats; who knew?
But Kanye was late to start. And last night, so was Kylie. 50 minutes late. Aren’t all concerts late? It’s expected…
But, it’s what everyone mentions…rather, complains of, the next day. Check out Kanye’s MTV Asia review (ouch). It’s not a shock, right? Jay-Z and R. Kelly were two (maybe three) hours late in Chicago during their Best of Both Worlds tour.
Kylie put on a SHOW last night: dancers, lights, costumes, the works. I think every Aussie gal in Singapore was there. It was great fun–exactly what it should be. She performed the faves: “Can’t Get You out of My Head” and “Love at First Sight,” as well as a ton from X, her latest album.
It was a blast dancing, but I just didn’t know her other songs that well. She was kind to the audience and so, so, so gorgeous. No wrinkles and a teeny, tiny tush. Kylie Rx: 50 SPF + 50 min runs = 40 and hot.
Kanye vs. Kylie? I’ll call it a tie.

I read this story in the local paper and it prompted me to check out Adam Gyorgy at the Victoria Concert Hall last week – nothing like a mid-week dose of culture! Ah, the power of editorial… I am a huge music fan, but admittedly don’t know a ton about classical music…as probably most of my generation would say (even though some days I feel like an old lady).
As you can imagine, Adam was incredibly impressive. He reinterprets the classics – shall I say, remix? The Girl Talk of classical music? Might be a stretch. There was a video screen on stage for the audience to follow his fingers across the keys. I met Adam; he’s cool, too. Of course, my brain started spinning about a marketing/PR campaign — ha! If he’s smart about it, he could introduce classical music to a wider audience and give it a needed boost of “hip” cache. Check him out on YouTube, iTunes or his site.
